Mosaic restoration was included in the activities of Novamosaici in the early 1980s, initially for the restoration of works created by the company itself in the 1950s/1960s.
Later, having learned the techniques and with the experience gained, the company started to carry out important mosaic restorations, both to walls and floors.
During the past few years the company has collaborated with Cinzia Pasquali, restorer of St. Anne of Leonardo da Vinci, who relied on Novamosaici for prestigious interventions in Paris, including the restoration of the mosaic pavement of the Peninsula Hotel.
The large mosaic floor of the Peninsula Hotel, which was originally located in the main entrance, owing to the need for restructuring and reinforcing the building, was removed and relocated to allow these works.
The mosaic was first detached, transported to the Novamosaici workshop, cleaned on the back and glued on lightweight substrates and, after restoration and cleaning on the visible side, it was placed again in the same building.
Recently, Cinzia Pasquali, commissioned Novamosaici other important restoration work to wall mosaics.
In these cases, the buildings were to be completely demolished.
With the experience and the use of innovative equipment, Novamosaici was, and is, able to respect the positioning of the mosaic or decoration, either on the floor or wall.
The Baj Wall, the last great project of the Master Enrico Baj before he died.
The Baj Wall, was an important creation made by Novamosaici in 2006, the work covers a total of 250 sq m and is placed on the side of a prefabricated wall 108 metres long, which separates the square from the railway line.
This structure is subject to two critical situations that cause degradation, in fact on the back side there is the continuous transit of trains and on the side of the square, that is, on the visible side of the mosaic, it is subject to a continuous flow of traffic.
The wall suffers a daily attack from ferrous dust from the railway line and smog from cars, associated with rainfall and the resulting water that cars splash to the bottom of the Baj Wall, since the road surface is only one metre from the mosaic wall.
This leaching by dirty water towards the bottom of the wall and the ferrous dust coming from above, have created a situation of severe deposit of dirt of various nature on the mosaic surface.
After restoration and cleaning with suitable products, non-aggressive for the grouting and the mosaic tesserae, Novamosaici managed to bring the mosaic of the Baj Wall back to the colour situation of 10 years before, that is, to its original splendour.
This floor mosaic is located outdoors and, after about 25 years, there has been infiltration on the perimeter walls of the terraces due to deterioration of the concrete skirting.
Novamosaici intervened by demolishing all the perimeter skirting and, after a waterproofing intervention, rebuilt new skirting, but by mosaic this time, following the design and colours of the original mosaic floor.
Thus managing to obtain a double result, both functional and aesthetic, in fact, the mosaic floor, surrounded by mosaic skirting, has assumed significant colour value.
Time, associated with the degradation or settling of building structures and atmospheric elements, are the ingredients leading to a slow and progressive deterioration of mosaics, especially if you do not perform regular maintenance of the surfaces.
Oddly enough, the detachment of a single tessera of the mosaic, if not re-positioned in the short term, will lead to a continuous degradation of the mosaic surface, especially on mosaics placed outdoors.
The weather and the freezing and thawing that affects cracks or gaps where the tessera is missing, are the main causes of this continuous degradation.
And it is for this reason that often Novamosaici is called to intervene, little maintenance.
Often, in a very superficial manner, cleaning, restoration or detachment intervention to mosaics are assigned to non-professionals resulting in damage to the mosaic surfaces.
Before starting a mosaic detachment operation, Novamosaici recovers all the tesserae of the cuts, in order to reuse them for the final restoration.
In the case of mosaics located indoors, often just simple cleaning and washing is sufficient.
Novamosaici uses only suitable and certified products that do not attack the mosaic tesserae and grouts.
These are aspects that very often are underestimated, but the use of unsuitable products is the reason why a mosaic loses gloss or gets further impregnated with dirt instead of getting clean.
For these reasons, the intervention of skilled personnel and professional products is always recommended.
In the most delicate cases, Novamosaici cleans the surface of the tesserae and the grouting by Laser.
